The Best 10 Yoga Photoshoot locations on the Mornington Peninsula!
While living and practising yoga on the Mornington Peninsula, one of my favourite things to do, is to go for an adventure and get lost in my own backyard.
I’ve stumbled across some hidden gems and found myself in spaces that feel out of this world!
Stay with me to discover 10 of the most idyllic locations to practice yoga or take beautiful yoga photos in this picturesque region (and also some tips to find good coffee – very important).
1. Somers Beach
The most special aspect here? The locals. Aka - the pod of dolphins, who you can visit all year round.
This beach town has a warm and welcoming community that really treasures its natural surroundings and wildlife. If you are lucky enough to receive a visit from the dolphins while you're in the water, please don’t touch them. Touching them can affect their behaviour, they often have calves with them, and they could leave the area and not come back if they feel unsafe. Also, our skin is covered in oils and bacteria that can disturb the protective mucus on the skin of marine life.
If you walk up the beach towards Stoney Point, on a clear day, the sand is white, the water is bright blue and there are beautiful pieces of driftwood washed onto the beach. You will feel as though you're on a private island in the Caribbean, what better place for a yoga photoshoot!
One thing to note, there are times when all the seaweed is dragged to the beach and you may be walking knee-deep in seaweed, but it’s all part of the fun! The beauty still remains.
Coffee tip number one – The Somers General Store is so much more than just a general store. It's super cute. You can sit out under an umbrella on the deck and enjoy great coffee, and food and even have a browse in their retail store that stocks all from local businesses.
2. Blairgowrie Ocean Beach
(Park on Saint Johns Wood Rd and access the walking trial from here).
This back beach gem is a rugged paradise with towering red rocks, cliffs, and crystal-clear rock pools.
The vivid colours of this land on a sunny day are a dream come true for photographers and yogis.
Explore stunning caves and arch rocks for captivating yoga photos, or simply roll out your mat on the beach for a serene stretch, flow, or meditation session.
3. Flinders Blowhole
Rugged, raw and wild! If you come on the right day, you’ll know why it’s called the Blowhole. When large waves rush into the cave they produce a big boom sound, it’s incredible!
There are so many spots to capture great pictures. You can take a swim in the rock pools on a good day but remain cautious of the waves and currents – this place can be dangerous to swim.
4. Safety Beach
This bay beach has the most tranquil, crystal-clear waters.
In the mornings you often find people with their horses, wading through the water for therapy.
It used to be one of my morning routines to set up my mat on a beach box or the sand and enjoy the ambience of the horses and rising sun as I moved through a gentle vinyasa.
One other great thing about this spot is that there are quite a few beach boxes with big front decks so you can set up your tripod and camera to get some great solo photos or a timelapse of your flow and the sunrise.
5. Red Hill Lavender Farm and Distillery
Amidst picturesque lavender fields, you can enjoy a stroll and take some beautiful shots.
Here there is also a lovely café that sells good coffee and yummy pastries. On a sunny day, you can sit out on the lawn and enjoy the beauty of the Red Hill forest.
6. Merricks Trail
Find yourself surrounded by towering pine trees, and with a slight adjustment of your camera's exposure settings, capture moody and whimsical shots as light filters through the trees. And when you're ready for a break, Merricks General Store is a fantastic spot for a coffee or even an impressive dinner by their open fireplace.
7. The Coastal Walk - Cape Schanck
The first time I came here I was in disbelief. It is beyond beautiful!
Picture a vast sandy expanse dropping dramatically into sheer cliffs. Gazing out, you'll feel as if you could get lost in the endless sea.
With a good camera, this backdrop is nothing short of breathtaking.
8. Gunnamatta Ocean Beach
This back beach is beautifully wild and rugged, making it the perfect setting for authentic and unfiltered photos.
You can find hidden caves for stunning silhouette photos or climb to the cliff tops for sweeping panorama shots and videos. Here, let the wind play its part, use it in your favour to get some stunning action shots!
9. Fort Nepean
Fort Nepean National Park is where History meets tranquillity.
This is a very unique spot for your yoga photoshoot. It used to guard Melbourne during two World Wars, but now its where calm Port Phillip waters meet the wild Southern Ocean waves.
Find your yoga poses amongst historic gun emplacements, within old tunnels, on the narrow stretch of land that shows stunning views of both the bay and the ocean.
Past meets present and nature meets history – a mesmerising backdrop for a shoot
10. Dromana Quarry
The Dromana Quarry is an enchanting location for your yoga photoshoot.
This former quarry, now reclaimed by nature, offers a captivating blend of tranquillity and raw beauty.
The sheer rock faces, rugged cliffs and beautiful, aqua-blue waters create a dramatic backdrop. As sunlight filters through the pine trees, it bathes the quarry in a warm glow, adding a bit of magic to your photos.
